Upholstery / Sewing Syllabus

  • Students will begin to learn the fundamental skills in upholstery and sewing. This is a 30-day unpaid probation phase which allows us the time:

    To see a student's commitment to the program

    To access a student’s natural creative ability which is essential for a successful career in these trades

    To teach the fundamental skills necessary to be a productive member of a project team

  • Students will begin earning minimum wage and become an active member of a project team. It is in this phase that they will begin to gain an understanding of upholstery, furniture and fabric.

    Students will be trained on “real” work

    Students will learn specific skills based on the projects they are assigned to

    Students will begin building a portfolio

    Students will have theory lessons based on the skills needed for their assigned project

  • Students hourly wage will be increased based on their independent skillset determined by their instructor. It is in this phase that a student will work on increasing their skillset, upholstery theory and confidence.

    Students will be assigned projects which allow for both independent work and continued skill training.

    Students will be required to start mentoring younger level students

    Students will continue creating their portfolio and begin building a client base.

  • Students hourly wage will be increased. Students accepted into this phase will have a firm understanding of upholstery and/or upholstery sewing. In order to enter into this phase, upholstery students will have to have independently reupholstered 2 sets of dining chairs, 2 wingback chairs and 2 sofas. Upholstery sewing students will have to have completed 10 sets of cushions and pillows (including measuring and cutting), 2 roman shades and 2 sets of drapes.

    Students are required to work full time

    Students will work independently under the guidance of their upholstery/sewing mentor

    Students will be required to mentor younger level students

    Under the guidance of their mentor, students will be contact person for their client. They will review project estimate with clients, answer any question or concerns, and assist in fabric selection.

    Students will remain in this phase until job placement or acceptance into the Co-Op Entrepreneur Program
