Upholstery/Sewing Program

Upholstery / Sewing Syllabus

  • Students will start by learning the fundamental skills of upholstery and sewing. During this phase, we will assess:

    • Their commitment to the program.

    • Their natural creative ability, which is essential for a successful career in these trades.

  • Students will actively participate as members of a project team, gaining hands-on experience in upholstery, furniture, and fabric. During this phase:

    • They will receive training on real-work projects.

    • They will develop specific skills based on their assigned tasks.

    • They will begin building a professional portfolio.

    • They will take theory lessons tailored to the skills required for their projects.

  • Students' hourly wages will begin to increase based on their independent skill level, as determined by their instructor. During this phase, they will focus on expanding their skills, deepening their understanding of upholstery theory, and building confidence.

    • They will be assigned projects that balance independent work with ongoing skill development.

    • They will take on mentoring responsibilities, guiding lower-level students.

    • They will continue developing their portfolio and start building a client base.

    • They will begin to apprentice with outside workrooms

  • Entrance into this phase is by invitation only and requires a strong understanding of upholstery and/or upholstery sewing. To qualify:

    • Upholstery students must be able to work independently

    • Students are required to sign a 5 year contract to work in The Cavanagh House workroom

    • They will mentor lower-level students.

    • Under their mentor’s supervision, they will serve as the primary contact for their clients—reviewing project estimates, addressing questions or concerns, and assisting with fabric selection.
